The Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies warmly welcomes Alex Hsu as our new undergraduate academic advisor. Hsu will guide students who are enrolled in or seeking enrollment in the supplementary major in Asian studies, the minor in Asian studies, and the new supplementary major in global affairs with a concentration in Global Asia through the Keough School of Global Affairs.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to help students explore Asia and Asian studies at Notre Dame,” Hsu said. “I’ve been studying in or about Asia since college, and it’s never stopped inciting my wonder. If you’re similarly curious or passionate about Asia, I’d be happy to help you plan your itinerary.”

“Notre Dame and the Liu Institute are extremely fortunate to have Professor Hsu serve in so many capacities,” said Liu Institute director Michel Hockx. “Our undergraduate students will benefit immensely from Alex’s passion for and expertise in Asia and Asian topics. We are thrilled at this appointment.”
A historian of early Buddhist scripture in China, Hsu earned a doctorate in religious studies from the University of Chicago, where he previously earned a master of divinity and a bachelor of religious studies and biological science.
Hsu joined the University of Notre Dame in fall 2018 as a post-doctoral researcher in the Keough School, working closely with the Liu Institute and the Ansari Institute for Global Engagement with Religion. He will continue his research role while serving as the Asian studies advisor.
Additionally, Hsu is offering the course Introduction to Buddhism: Stories, Scriptures, and Saints in fall 2019 that teaches about Buddhism through its media—sacred objects such as scrolls, books, icons, and murals.
Students are encouraged to schedule appointments with Hsu by emailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org or calling him at 574-631-7093. Office hours are 11 a.m.–1 p.m. on Wednesday in 4155 Jenkins Nanovic Halls or by appointment.
