Jill Pentimonti, executive director of research advancement in Notre Dame Research, has been selected to serve as the 2024 president of The Science Coalition (TSC).

Established in 1994, TSC is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization of more than 50 of the nation’s leading public and private research universities. It is dedicated to sustaining the federal government’s investment in fundamental scientific research as a means to stimulate the economy, spur innovation, and drive American competitiveness.

“I am excited to serve as president during this crucial time for science,” said Pentimonti at TSC's annual meeting on Wednesday. "As we enter an election year, investments in public health, clean energy, and artificial intelligence will be up for debate. As TSC's president, I will ensure that the media and policymakers recognize the importance of protecting the federal investment in science and research."

Jeffrey F. Rhoads, vice president for research and professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, said, “We are excited to see Jill take on this crucial leadership role. She is a powerful advocate for the value of research that advances our understanding and contributes to the good of society, and in this new role she will create opportunities not just for Notre Dame researchers but for our research peers and collaborators around the country.”

Pentimonti challenged TSC members to be bold in reaching new audiences and in testing new, innovative ways to communicate the value of fundamental science. Alongside stories that showcase the practical benefits of fundamental science, Pentimonti said she plans to develop new, hands-on opportunities for members, elected leaders, and government officials opportunities to experience the science firsthand.

Pentimonti brings with her over two decades of experience in a variety of educational settings. In addition to strengthening Notre Dame's impact and reach with federal research agencies, Pentimonti, an expert in evidence-based education interventions, maintains an active research portfolio. She holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Notre Dame, a master's degree in education from Northwestern University, and a master's degree in reading education from the University of Virginia. She completed her PhD in education and human ecology from The Ohio State University.
